The Land

Situated in the eastern edge of the Texas Panhandle mixed grass prairie region, the Bar G Ranch consists of rolling hills bisected by a main draw and several smaller draws which drain north toward the Washita River. At around 2,500 feet elevation, the Bar G Ranch’s landscape is typical of the semi-arid land just west of the 100th Meridian and the area receives an average of 20.5 inches of rainfall annually.

Typical of this part of Texas, the climate, soil type, elevation influence the vegetation growing on the clay loam and alluvial soils found within the ranch boundaries. The 204-day growing season provides a buffet of bobwhite quail and other wildlife friendly plants like little bluestem, sand dropseed, sand sage, halfshrub sundrop, yucca, partridge pea, englemann daisy, scurfpea, catclaw sensitive briar, big bluestem, and buffalo grass.

Along the draws and uplands, you’ll find species typical of prairie woodlands like elm trees, locust mottes, cottonwoods, and broad sand plum thickets that provide food for wildlife and loafing cover for bobwhite quail.

There is no cultivation on the Bar G Ranch and grazing pressure is minimal. For cattle production, the area typically supports an animal unit for every 25 acres.

Weather-wise, the average maximum temperature is 95° F in July, and the average minimum is 23° in January.

Wildlife

Located in an area known for diverse wildlife populations and big bodied and big antlered deer, the Bar G Ranch is home to a variety of both game and non-game species.

For hunters, plan on the opportunity to hunt whitetail deer, bobwhite quail, Rio Grande turkey, mourning doves, prairie dogs, bobcats, coyotes, and cottontail rabbits.

For wildlife watchers, the ranch is home to a variety of songbirds like scissor-tailed flycatchers, cardinals, horned larks, burrowing owls, blue jays, western meadowlarks, and a host of other songbirds typical of the shortgrass prairies. While none are documented on the Bar G, just a short drive away, access is available where you can witness the spectacle of the rare Lesser Prairie Chicken on their spring booming grounds.

Structures/Fences/Improvements

The Bar G boasts many structures and improvements.

A centerpiece of the ranch’s improvements is the massive, 6,300 square foot, handcrafted log home constructed of Canadian Hemlock timbers. With three levels, the rustically appointed home boasts:

•Six bedrooms;
•A lower level game/TV room;
•A mud room entrance;
•Seven bathrooms;

•A great room with 25-foot vaulted, exposed beam ceilings;
•A broad front porch that spans the entire width of the home;
•A 1,300 square foot wrap around deck complete with an outdoor fireplace;
•Five interior fireplaces;
•And a fully furnished interior complete with leather seating in the great room, a lavish dining room set, and all bedrooms come furnished with a variety of bed sizes.

Behind the main lodge is a rock driveway and a small workshop/storage building.

Near the county road that fronts the eastern side of the property is a smaller, two story log cabin that is 1,300 square feet, two-stories, and sports three bedrooms, two baths, a loft office, kitchen/dining room combo, a mud/utility room, and, like the main house, comes fully furnished with couches, dining room set, and beds.

Behind the guest cabin is a modern, functioning dog kennel with enough space for 22 dogs. The kennel sports a concrete floor for easy washout and the pens are modular and galvanized.

On the east end of the dog kennel facility is a rustically finished office space/work area and bunkhouse complete with a bathroom, sink, and ample counter space in the work area.

The Bar G Ranch has four ponds on the property. Behind the main house is the largest pond - about three acres - and is spring fed which keeps its water level constant year round. Scattered throughout the rest of the ranch are three more stock ponds. One serves as a windmill overflow pond and the other’s water level is intermittent based on the year’s rainfall.

Additionally, three functioning windmills scattered throughout the acreage that serve as livestock and wildlife water.

Fences on the ranch are in good shape and the Bar G is crossfenced into four pastures. One of the pastures is a hay field (approximately 60 acres) that’s planted in Old World Bluestem and produced 100 round bales last year.

The entire ranch is accessible by unimproved roads that bisect the property.
